The last couple of years we've spent making our home a reflection of our lives. Our apartment here in Brooklyn is also our primary workspace, and admittedly we spend a lot of time here.
We bring things back from our travels, buy art from friends, bargain for old things, and try to surround ourselves with the things we love. Most of the things we own have some story behind them, even the plants. I once dug up succulents from a friends yard in California and flew back with them in Big Gulp cups.
If I had to describe our style, I'd say it's a mix of mid-century modern, boho, and rustic. With that, you'll find a warm earthy color palette full of ivory, orange, and yellow, with subtle complimentary hints of blue. The pottery and fabrics are usually full of different textures. I find inspiration in the intricate details of Moroccan decor and Southwestern textiles that remind me of the blankets from my childhood. For me, the rustic wood elements provide organic textures and warmth with the simple, raw, natural beauty.
Like most New Yorkers we have limited space and are always challenged with making our place both functional and comfortable. Before purchasing or bringing anything home, we ask ourselves where it's going to go because everything has its place. We declutter on a monthly basis yet always feel like we have too much stuff! Our apartment is long, narrow and lacks storage space but we've managed to get creative and make the most of it.
When we first saw the duplex apartment, we instantly fell in love. The layout was ideal, and we were excited to have an outdoor garden space as well as access to the roof. The three bedrooms were spaced out and away from the common areas. The ceilings were high, and we loved that they didn't skimp on details like the lighting. Here we are almost seven years later, and we're still in love with this space we're lucky enough to call home.
